I had an amazing night at the Berkshire Theatre Festival last night! Beginning to hate my ol' pal Randy Harrison for being SO talented. He sang the HELL out of "Tommy!" The whole cast was great but Randy, James Barry & Jenny Powers brought such searing emotions to their roles it actually moved me as never before. How will I get all those damned songs out of my head?

Last night there was a miracle – in more ways than one – on South Street in Pittsfield. The Who’s Tommy is the first production of the newly minted Berkshire Theatre Group and it was more than good, or great. It was heart-thumpingly fantastic. By the time the classic story of Peter Townshend’s deaf, dumb and blind boy had been told, the audience was up and out of its seats, whopping, hollering, dancing in the aisles with complete joy and abandon.

To show the different stages of development Tommy is played by two young actors as a child, and then by Randy Harrison as he matures.
In the first act Harrison also acts as the narrator, until the second act in which he finally becomes free. From that moment on, the show belongs to him, and indeed the story has the crowd following him like the pinball rock star he has become.

We have seen Harrison in any number of roles over the years, both on the famed television series Queer as Folk that first brought him to the public’s attention, and in dozens of less visible roles off, off-off and so-far-off-Broadway-you-need-a-transfer.
He was a brilliant male ingenue in QAF, but his work as a mature actor on stage is actually more riveting. He has earned his bona fides as a master of drama, comedy and musicals, and with this role, he can add rock star to his resume. The voice we heard in the theatre was not the same one he used in Wicked on Broadway, it was throatier, raspier as is the standard in rock, yet it had the clarity and innocence that was required for this role. One can only guess where this show, this role may lead him in the future.

Playing the most famous deaf, mute, and blind boy of all time, Randy Harrison likes what he sees and hears at Pittsfield’s Colonial Theatre.
"It's just stunningly beautiful," Harrison said this week after three days of rehearsal for "The Who's Tommy". "I think it's sort of wonderful that it’s this classically beautiful theater, and we're doing this rock opera and just going to rip it apart in a way, metaphorically."
He laughs, but "Tommy" isn't the only tale of transformation going on around this short production, which runs through July 16.

The Who’s Tommy Cast Now Assembled
It’s a huge undertaking, perhaps the largest ever for Maguire and The Berkshire Theatre Festival. Tommy is not a musical for shoestring budgets, and even while watching every penny, Maguire has pulled out all the stops. There are 23 actors in the cast, plus another six in the band that accompanies the performers.
The original rock opera, The Who’s Tommy is at once a show-stopping rock concert and a cautionary tale of the power and perils of celebrity. We witness Tommy Walker from his birth, through the shocking episodes of his childhood that render him deaf, mute and blind, as he conquers the world with his stardom, and finally after the crowds have turned on him. Featuring legendary songs by the Who, including “Pinball Wizard,” “See Me, Feel Me” and “Tommy, Can You Hear Me?” and with a cast including James Barry of Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson as Captain Walker and Randy Harrison from Wicked and Queer as Folk as Tommy, this promises to be the event of the summer in the Berkshires.

I met Randy at the after show of Tommy last night and was lucky enough to get a picture with him. I was seriously shaking. He did an amazing job. I want to go see it again!! :)
